Why Now Is the Time for Musicians, Fans, and Industry Leaders to Step Up
Austin proudly calls itself the Live Music Capital of the World.
But a city doesn't earn that title because music happens here.
It earns it because musicians choose to create here. Venues choose to invest here. Fans choose to support live music. Advocates choose to fight for the people who make the culture possible.
And right now, that culture needs our help.
For years, Austin Texas Musicians (ATXM) has worked behind the scenes to protect, strengthen, and grow Austin's music ecosystem.
We've advocated at City Hall, the State Capitol, and in Washington, D.C.
We've helped secure millions of dollars for musicians and venues.
We've fought for fair pay standards, created educational programs, built community connections, and worked to ensure musicians have a seat at the table when decisions affecting their livelihoods are made.
The results speak for themselves:
More than $14 million secured for musicians and venues through the Live Music Fund
Establishment of a $200 minimum pay standard
Educational programming serving artists across Central Texas
Economic development initiatives creating paid opportunities
Ongoing advocacy protecting the future of Austin music
But today, we find ourselves at a crossroads.
The Challenges Are Growing
The music industry is changing faster than ever.
Independent artists are navigating shrinking revenues, rising costs, changing technology, venue pressures, and an increasingly complex digital landscape.
At the same time, artificial intelligence is raising urgent questions about ownership, consent, compensation, copyright, voice replication, and the future of human creativity itself.
Who speaks for independent musicians when these conversations happen?
Who ensures artists aren't left behind?
Who educates musicians about their rights?
Who advocates for policies that protect creators instead of exploiting them?
That work doesn't happen by accident.
It requires dedicated people, resources, and funding.
Why We're Asking for Help
Like many nonprofit organizations, ATXM has been impacted by significant changes in funding.
Our primary benefactor was forced to discontinue support for personal reasons in 2025. Many grant opportunities have slowed or disappeared entirely due to economic uncertainty and shifting priorities.
As a result, we must now turn directly to the community.
We urgently need to raise $500,000 by June 30 to continue our advocacy, education, and economic development work.
Without immediate support, much of this work will have to pause until funding can be restored.
That would mean fewer resources for musicians. Fewer opportunities. Less advocacy. Less representation.
And at a moment when musicians need support more than ever.
This Is Bigger Than Austin
What happens here matters.
Cities across the country are watching Austin's music ecosystem and looking to replicate successful programs that support musicians and venues.
ATXM has become a model for what grassroots advocacy can accomplish when artists, businesses, community leaders, and supporters work together.
The work we're doing today could become a blueprint for music communities nationwide.
But we can't do it alone.

The Future of Austin Music Is Not Guaranteed
Austin's music culture isn't something we inherit.
It's something we protect.
Every generation has a responsibility to leave the ecosystem stronger than they found it.
The musicians who perform on our stages. The songwriters who tell our stories. The venues that create gathering spaces. The businesses that benefit from music tourism. The fans who love live music.
We're all connected.
The question isn't whether Austin music is worth saving.
The question is whether enough of us are willing to stand up and help save it.
If Austin's music community has ever inspired you, entertained you, comforted you, challenged you, or helped shape who you are, now is the time to give back.
Together, we can ensure that musicians don't just survive in Austin.
They can thrive here.
And together, we can protect the future of human creativity itself.
Join us. Donate. Advocate. Participate. Share.
Because Austin music needs more than talent. It needs all of us.
